“Billie brings a calm, creative energy to everything she makes. Her deep connection to the environment shines through in her work..."

IV caps. An insulin pen. A COVID-19 test. These are some of the medical supply items Lansdowne Children’s Centre client and artist Billie MacDonald-Moore used to create a map of Canada.
When speaking about the piece, Tiffany Morgan, SmartStart Hub and Quality Assurance Supervisor noted,
“What makes it so powerful is the intention behind every detail. Each item was chosen with care, some to represent the province they’re placed in, others for the purpose those materials have served. It’s a piece that blends creativity, symbolism, and advocacy in a way that only Billie can.”
The piece and the artist were celebrated on June 15, when Billie was named as the 2026 recipient of the Terry Fisher Memorial Award, for art student of the year, at Lansdowne's annual general meeting.
"Lansdowne has always been a place where I can be me."
"A place that I will miss when I go to school, a place that became my second home. I appreciate Tiffany and the team for recognizing my work and letting me leave my mark on Lansdowne," Billie said.
The award was established in 1988 to honour the memory of Terry, who had been a client at Lansdowne; he had loved art and was known for his joyful spirit and creativity. Each year, Lansdowne staff nominate a client who shows the same passion for life and art.
As she was presenting the award, Tiffany said, “Billie brings a calm, creative energy to everything she makes. Her deep connection to the environment shines through in her work, from mystical fairies, to delicate fashion and costume designs, to her thoughtful practice of repurposing materials in imaginative ways.”
Billie will be taking those interests forward as she begins her studies in Environmental Sustainability and Resource Management in the fall.
