These play-based and child-led programs for young children, ages 12 months to 48 months, aim to build caregivers’ capacity to support their child’s skill development by teaching strategies that may help their young children learn new skills and meet individual goals. Autism Services Caregiver-Mediated Early Years programs are FREE of charge and teach families strategies that may help their young children learn new skills and meet individual goals. These play-based and child-led programs are for young children, ages 12 months to 48 months, and aim to build caregivers’ capacity to support their child’s skill development. A program is available for a period of up to six-months per child. Who is eligible? • Your child must be a registered member of the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). • Eligible families will receive an invitation from the Ministry via email and/or post mail. • Only families with invitations are able to sign up for the program. If you have received an invitation you can reach our Family Support Worker by phone at 519-753-3153 ext. 268, or by email at autism@lansdownecc.com to plan your service. Eligibility Start Referral 1) Child is Registered with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP) 2) Child is under 48 months of age Goals, Skills and Keywords Expectations Autism Services at Lansdowne Children's Centre will deliver three service option models: Social ABCs; Pivotal Response Training (PRT); and Early Social Interaction/Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports(ESI/SCERTS). Social ABCs This is an early intervention program in which parents learn a set of strategies for helping their Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosed toddler communicate and interact socially, using play-based activities and daily routines that their child finds most motivating. Pivotal Response Training (PRT) A variation of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) type therapy, Pivotal Response Training focuses on more comprehensive “pivotal” areas, such as increasing a child's motivation to learn, initiate communication, and monitor their own behaviors. Early Social Interaction/Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports The ESI/SCERTS model is a research-based educational approach and multidisciplinary framework that directly addresses the core challenges faced by children and persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related disabilities, and their families. These conditions have affected her both physically and mentally. She loves to go on long walks and hikes if it is wheelchair accessible to her and also loves to go swimming and doing lots of arts and crafts! She is a very social person; she always has a smile on her face and will do what she can to keep a smile on yours! Lansdowne has been an amazing support for Kendra throughout her life, and she currently has ongoing help from Physiotherapy, Occupational Therapy, and a Child & Youth worker. She loves the recreational programs and the Kids Country Inn. She has used speech therapy before school as well and is grateful for these programs and services. Your Child's Safety and Wellness: Wellness Guide | | Lansdowne Children's Centre Resource Library Your Child's Safety and Wellness: Wellness Guide Safety & Wellness is a Team Effort…… And You are an Important member of the Team You and your child are important members of the Lansdowne Children’s Centre (LCC) team. Think Safe...Communicate • Make sure LCC staff involved in your child’s services have important health information • If you don’t understand some part of your child’s condition or treatment ask LCC staff to explain why things are being done the way they are. If you still have concerns ask again Ask if you don’t understand Know your Lansdowne Team • If your not sure who one of your service providers is, or what their role is please ask • LCC staff are trained in First Aid and CPR and there are First Aid Stations throughout the building. Fire and emergency preparedness drills occur regularly Help Keep Us All Safe • Call your service provider if you or your child are ill • Always remember to wash or sanitize your hands • Cough and sneeze into your shoulder or sleeve—not into your hands • Do not smoke on LCC property • Do not smoke while LCC staff are in your home • Keep animals under control while LCC staff are in your home, staff will inform you of any pet allergies • Make sure that there is a clean and safe area in your home when LCC staff visit Medication Safety • Ensure LCC staff is aware of the name and any possible side effects of any medication your child is taking • Directly inform each LCC staff that you are involved with about any allergies • If medication is to be given by LCC staff, please follow the Medication policy and ensure medication is in it’s original, childproof, labeled containers Know Your Child’s Equipment • Make sure your child’s equipment is kept clean and in good working order • Ask your child’s Occupational or Physiotherapist to check that your equipment is safe • Use equipment only as directed Help Prevent Falls • Help keep hallways free of clutter and obstacles, report any tripping hazards both inside and outside the building • Always watch your children in our waiting room or therapy areas • Make sure your children are wearing appropriate footwear, and be cautious of slippery floors during poor weather • Encourage all children to walk, not run in our building STOP & Clean your Hands • Keeping your hands clean is the best way of preventing the spread of germs • Use the hand sanitizers in the front lobby upon entering the building • Wash your hands after handling any type of soiled material or using the bathroom • LCC staff are committed to sanitizing their hands prior to and after working with your child. Feel free to ask them if they have done so • Therapy equipment and surfaces used are cleaned and maintained to ensure everyone’s wellness and safety Reporting Child Abuse and Neglect Lansdowne staff must report to the Family and Children's Services, any reasonable concerns of abuse. As a parent/guardian it is your responsibility to report any concerns regarding your child’s caregiver. Child abuse happens when a child’s parent or other person in charge harms or neglects a child. What is physical child abuse? Beating, slapping, hitting, pushing, throwing, shaking, burning What is sexual abuse? Sexual abuse happens when a parent or other person in charge sexually molests or uses a child for sexual purposes or knowingly fails to protect a child from sexual abuse What is emotional abuse? Yelling at, screaming at, threatening, frightening, or bullying a child, humiliating the child, name-calling or saying things like: “You’re no good”, “You’re worthless”, showing little to no physical affection or attention What is Neglect? Developmental Consultants partner with families to enhance the growth and development of children and provide support, information and early intervention services A home-based service for children age birth to school entry. Give Today Ways To Give Meet The Kids Partner Profiles Impact Report Our Board Contact Us < Back MASON 2022 Lansdowne Heroes Walk and Roll Ambassador Story submitted by Mason’s Mom (Karissa Boughner) Mason was born at 27 weeks gestation weighing just 1.8lbs. Due to his weakened lungs, he required a lengthy hospital stay of 451 days at McMaster Children's Hospital. While there, he underwent numerous treatments, 3 surgeries and some very scary days to ultimately come home. Since Mason needed breathing support he had surgery for a tracheostomy in order to be able to be ventilated at home. As his parents, we did extensive training for three months to ensure his safety and set-up a mini intensive care unit in our living room. “Once arriving home, our family turned to Lansdowne for support. Mason needed help to develop the skills he didn't get the opportunity to during his first year and we needed guidance on the supports and resources available.” Despite the pandemic, Landowne adapted to provide virtual and outdoor sessions to ensure Mason could be kept safe but still develop his skills. We were directed to the HITs (Holistic Integrated Teams) as his needs were dispersed amongst several areas. The physiotherapist on the team was able to see Mason outside and observe his movements and stance. She was able to determine that Mason would benefit from wearing SMOs (a foot brace) to help support his gross motor skills and directed us to a business that could provide them. The occupational therapist created virtual sessions to engage Mason in various sensory play and fine motor tasks. She was able to recommend different strategies to help Mason overcome his sensory avoidance and strengthen his long fingers for fine motor tasks. The speech language pathologist provided guidance on how to develop Mason's communication skills through play despite Mason not being able to talk. He also submitted the paperwork for Mason to have access to a communication device. The social worker would touch base with us to ensure financial and emotional resources were being utilized as needed. Lansdowne helped our family to transition home from a hospital setting and ensured we were getting the help we needed. The biggest thing they did is instill confidence in us as parents that we were doing the right things and supporting us in the decisions we made for Mason's development plan. Lansdowne continues to provide support in Mason's development today. They helped him to have a successful entry to daycare by providing strategies to us and the provider on how to ease his transition into the new environment. He is currently learning to interact with other kids his age and follow routines. Lansdowne has also helped to prepare a report for his transition to school in the upcoming months and provide timelines of meetings to discuss his safety plans. We are very appreciative to Lansdowne for helping us to navigate Brantford as a parent of a medically complex child! The children and families of Lansdowne thank you for your support. The Social Workers of Lansdowne Children’s Centre are professionally trained and registered members of the Ontario College of Social Workers Social Service Workers. Social Workers can provide supportive counselling to help support mental wellness including assistance in developing positive coping strategies, problem solving overwhelming loss/grief difficulty coping with a child’s diagnosis or prognosis Eligibility Start Referral Children and youth receiving services from Lansdowne Children's Centre and their families are eligible for Social Work Services. Referrals can be requested by the family or youth or may be suggested by another Lansdowne service provider working with the child and their family. Goals, Skills and Keywords Expectations Once a referral to Social Work has been completed you will be contacted by a member of the Social Work team. Service needs are determined through goal-based care plans and may include individual or family intervention and support. Social Workers can provide supportive counselling to help with: Adjustment to illness & disability Client & caregiver stress & coping Connecting to financial & community resources Building confidence and self-advocacy skills Providing support to the whole family Various groups and programs may be offered for sibling support needs, youth transitions, healthy relationships & sexual education.
