Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), is a therapy based on the science of learning and behavior. ABA therapy applies our understanding of how behavior works to real situations. The goal is to increase behaviors that are helpful and decrease behaviors that are harmful or affect learning. ABA treatment is individualized to meet the unique needs of your child/youth, focusing on desired behaviour with awareness of emotional and environmental influences. Can ABA Help? YES! ABA therapy when supervised by a Board-Certified Behaviour Analyst (BCBA) helps to increase functional appropriate behavior and decreases challenging behavior. Why Lansdowne? Lansdowne Children's Centre has been a trusted provider of Autism Services for children and youth with Autism in Brantford and Brant County since 2004. We have provided Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA) services throughout this time including Intensive Behaviour Intervention (IBI), ABA Supports and Services, groups, workshops and parent training. Our caring staff get to know our children and families well, and learn how to best suit their needs. Our Family-Centered principles guide our relationship working with children, parents and caregivers in collaboration. We also have access to other specialist Lansdowne team members should you have questions or needs outside of Autism Services. Common Questions What is a Family Support Worker? Our Family Support Workers (FSW) are here to help children, youth and their families’ access appropriate Autism services and supports quickly and easily. Fee-for-Service programs and services require a client payment for access to the program or service, similar to pay-to-play recreation programs like music lessons, youth sports and art classes. We are happy to help you discover available funding programs to offset your Fee-for-Service costs. The Ontario Autism Program (OAP) is an example of a provincial government program requiring registration, application and approval to access funds. Additional funding resources include grants, scholarships, bursaries and sponsorships. Foundational Family Services are no-cost to the client family. They are publicly funded programs and services, accessible to all clients meeting the need criteria for the service or program. Free Foundational Family Services begin with a no-charge intake consultation to learn more about you and your child, and your family's needs. We are happy to make recommendations for programs and assistance to best-serve your unique needs. What is the Caregiver-Mediated Early Years Program? Autism Services Caregiver-Mediated Early Years programs are FREE of charge, part of our Foundational Family Services, and teach families strategies that may help their young children learn new skills and meet individual goals. These play-based and child-led programs are for young children, ages 12 months to 48 months (1 - 4 years), and aim to build caregivers’ capacity to support their child’s skill development. A program is available for a period of up to six-months per child. How long is your waitlist? The time between your initial intake consultation and your first program or service experience varies, depending on the program or service you are seeking. We do not have a standard expectation for wait time. We do have excellent resource consultants that are happy to help you navigate waittimes by recommending alternative action plans to fill your time. These alternatives may include one, or a mix of suggestions, including virtual care, streaming webinars for at-home actions, or alternate program paths with available capacity. Lansdowne physiotherapy focuses on helping infants, children and youth develop and optimize their large motor control muscles and abilities, including muscle strength and range. Mobility activities may include rolling, crawling, standing, walking. (PT) Physiotherapists at Lansdowne Children’s Centre provide assessment and treatment for infants, children and youth up to age 19, with difficulties in muscle strength, joint range of motion, quality of movement, tone and gross motor development. Treatment includes teaching strategies to the family, caregivers and clients to improve function. Physiotherapy also provides support in accessing mobility equipment such as wheelchairs and walkers. They learn how to pinpoint an injury’s root causes. Physiotherapists focus on both prevention and rehabilitation. Treatment can be for problems caused by injury, disease or disability. Some examples include: neck and back pain caused by problems in the muscles and skeleton; Problems in the bones, joints, muscles and ligaments; Lung problems such as asthma; Disability as a result of heart problems; Pelvic issues, such as bladder and bowel problems related to childbirth; Loss of mobility because of trauma to the brain or spine, or due to diseases such as Parkinson’s disease and multiple sclerosis; Fatigue, pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of muscle strength. Say What They Mean communication strategies | Speech, Early Years | Lansdowne Children's Centre Resource Library Say What They Mean communication strategies If your child does not use words, or you don’t understand what was said, say it as your child would if they could. Give your child a good, clear model of how the words should sound, without calling attention to the error. For example: Child: “ba” Parent: “Bird, yes there’s the bird!” Give your child the words for sounds or gestures that they use. For example: Child: Reaches for juice and grunts, “ah-ah” Parent: Interprets that child wants juice and says, “Juice. Want Juice?” Parent then pours child juice. Child: Screams and begins to cry when parent presents book at bed time. Applicants must undergo background checks [police and Child & Family Services of Grand Erie] Connection with Lansdowne Children's Centre as a past client, client family or caregiver is beneficial, but is not a prerequisite for consideration. The Board of Directors for Lansdowne Children’s Centre has a maximum of 16 voting members, and an Ex-Officio appointed Medical Director. Your Board Committment Board members are required to attend monthly meetings, typically during midday. The Board meets as a united group on alternating months. Committees meet as sub-groups on alternate months and as scheduled. Board membership requires participation on a Committee. One Board member also serves as a liaison to Lansdowne Children's Centre Foundation Board Participation and attendance at Centre and community functions, including Lansdowne Foundation events, is valued but not mandatory. Social ABCs This is an early intervention program in which parents learn a set of strategies for helping their Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosed toddler communicate and interact socially, using play-based activities and daily routines that their child finds most motivating. Pivotal Response Training (PRT) A variation of Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) type therapy, Pivotal Response Training focuses on more comprehensive “pivotal” areas, such as increasing a child's motivation to learn, initiate communication, and monitor their own behaviors. Early Social Interaction/Social Communication Emotional Regulation and Transactional Supports The ESI/SCERTS model is a research-based educational approach and multidisciplinary framework that directly addresses the core challenges faced by children and persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and related disabilities, and their families.
