Resource consultants are specialists in child development and inclusion. Their primary role is to partner with educators to identify barriers to participation and develop strategies that support all children— especially those with additional or diverse needs, or developmental delays, including children with exceptionalities. Resource consultants: observe classroom dynamics, facilitate team discussions, and offer guidance on best practices. Resource Consultants help educators identify how to adapt environments and better support inclusion. These innovations help to integrate children with additional needs into Early Learning settings by offering appropriate strategies and tools to meet each child's unique needs and strengths, to increase a child’s participation in early learning environments. Resource consultants provide developmental screening, assisting in identification of developmental concerns, and providing recommendations for appropriate interventions or referrals. Resource consultants provide training and coaching for educators, professional development, on topics like behavior management, inclusive practices, and child development. Educators are then armed with knowledge and skills they can implement in their early learning environment and share with their client families. Resource consultants collaborate and partner with client families to identify children’s areas of strength and emerging skills requiring intervention and connect them with local services and support. Resource consultants also collaborate with other Lansdowne service providers and other professionals to create cohesive support plans for children. The Role of Childcare Support Workers Childcare Support Workers, or enhanced staff as they are sometimes called, are additional educators to help support programs/classrooms to implement recommendations and strategies developed in collaboration with the Resource Consultant. Childcare support workers work directly with educators to support inclusive practices—whether that means adapting activities, assisting with transitions, or helping children engage meaningfully with their peers and environment. A childcare support worker is considered for a classroom or program when Resource Consultant recommendations, strategies, resources and accommodations have been used in the environment, and needs for support continue. Examples include: · safety concerns · risk of harm to self or others · Elopement · ongoing health concerns requiring significant attention of an educator · or physical needs that require educators to physically place a child to explore the classroom Eligibility Start Referral Children birth - 12 years of age with a developmental concern and or delay are eligible for the program. Referrals can be made directly to Lansdowne Children’s Centre by parents, or community workers. Communication includes speech sound production, understanding and producing language and using language to interact with others. Areas we work on in speech and language therapy: Understanding words and sentences Using words and putting words together Using language to interact with others Making speech sounds Stuttering Feeding and swallowing concerns What is a Speech-Language Pathologist? Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) provide assessment and treatment for infants and children with communication delays or disorders, or feeding and swallowing concerns. What is a Communicative Disorders Assistant? A Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) provides speech and language intervention under the supervision of a SLP. Eligibility Start Referral Lansdowne Children's Centre is the lead agency for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Preschool Speech and Language Program. Lansdowne speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide speech and language intervention to children residing in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties, and Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. Services are provided at Lansdowne sites in Brantford (Brant County), Simcoe (Norfolk County), Dunnville and Caledonia (Haldimand County). Children are eligible for Preschool Speech and Language services from birth to school entry. Goals, Skills and Keywords Expectations Once a referral to Speech and Language Therapy has been completed your child will be placed on an Assessment Waitlist. Our team will contact you to book your appointment when your turn comes. At assessment, you and your child will meet with a a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who will carry out an evaluation to determine your child’s abilities and needs in communication and/or feeding. The SLP will review findings with you, and together you will determine the best plan of intervention for your child following our care pathways. Parents can borrow, at no cost: - Toys - therapeutic toys, games, puzzles - Equipment to help with home programs, school or day care - Resource information, a large selection of books, videos, reference files and pamphlets with a wide variety of topics from feeding and nutrition, to toilet training and behaviour strategies. The Resource Centre is located in the front entrance of Lansdowne Children’s Centre in Brantford, at 39 Mount Pleasant Street, and is open: Monday to Thursday 8:00am to 8:00pm and Friday 8:00am to 3:30pm Who is eligible to use the Parent Resource Centre? Anyone using services offered through Lansdowne Children’s Centre is welcome and encouraged to use our Resource Centre. What can I expect? A borrower’s card is issued and enables you to sign out up to 4 items at a time. The usual length of time an item can be borrowed is 3 weeks. SS@H can be used in a variety of ways to best meet the needs of each unique family. Support can be provided either in the home or in a variety of community settings The program is funded by the Ministry of Children, Community and Social Services. Some of the ways SS@H can provide your child with support are: 1:1 Support Worker to support your child in working toward their own unique goals. 1:1 Support Worker to provide families with a short break from the demands of caring for their child. The purchase of a variety of other individualized supports and services for your child based on current Ministry guidelines. Give Today Ways To Give Meet The Kids Partner Profiles Impact Report Our Board Contact Us < Back MADELYN 2023 Lansdowne Heroes Walk and Roll Ambassador Madelyn and her twin sister Brooke were born healthy babies with no complications. You wouldn’t know by looking at them, but they are twins, born 10 minutes apart. They met all of their milestones as babies, rolling over, walking etc. It wasn’t until approximately 18-24 months old that their parents started to notice some strange behaviours and their development was starting to stall in certain areas. Both girls showed a delay in speech, having very little, to no communication, both verbally and non-verbally. They also lacked social skills, and they preferred to be by themselves or only with their parents. Their play was also delayed for their age; no pretend or imitation play. They also showing signs of stimming; arm flapping, repetitive head or finger movements, and tip-toe walking. The girls started at Lansdowne with the early integration program that would assist the girls while at daycare. With the help of their LCC support, daycare staff, and their pediatrician, both girls were referred to Dr. Klein for an official Autism diagnosis in The Spring of 2020. As soon as they received their Autism diagnosis, they gained access to a variety of resources from Lansdowne, starting with speech therapy and some occupational therapy. Even though Covid caused a province wide lockdown, putting a halt on services, Brooke and Madelyn were able to attend in center sessions when safely possible. Both girls progressed, and were able to express their wants and needs using non-verbal communication system called PECS (Picture Exchange Communication System). Once the girls started kindergarten, they started in the ABA program at Lansdowne. Through this program, their progress really accelerated, and they have really excelled in many different areas. Madelyn, who was mostly non-verbal starting the program, is now having conversations, following instructions and answering questions. She will tolerate undesired activities and has learned other ways to direct her frustrations. Brooke is now able to communicate her wants and needs more consistently, both verbally and non-verbally. They have both learned to tolerate undesired activities, and learned skills to become more independent. Brooke and Madelyn have been able to participate in many recreation programs offered through Lansdowne such as March break camp, summer camp, community corner program& Saturday Socials program. They love going to these activities as it gives them a chance to explore new things at their own pace, making it a much more enjoyable experience. Their parents have also taken advantage of the Lansdowne Resource Centre, Autism Clinics, and Parent Events. Lansdowne has given the whole family all the resources they need. Whenever their parents have a question or concernarise, their Lansdowne team is always quick with tips, tricks, recommendations and willing to brain storm to come up with solutions that are geared to each child’s unique individual needs and interests. Both Madelyn and Brooke love coming to Lansdowne. You can often see them in the halls; Madelyn skipping with a basket of toys or Brooke with her beloved books in her hand.
