Lansdowne Children's Centre offers summer activity suggestions

Summer's not done yet, which means there’s still time to have fun and make memories! Here are some suggestions of things your family could try before school’s back in session. Do one, do a few, do them all, add your own ideas!

  • Do a surprise act of kindness for someone special in your life! Make them a card, bake them cookies, draw them a cool picture – whatever will brighten their day.

  • Make a piece of art inspired by your pet (or favourite animal)! You can draw it on paper, create it out of Play Doh, build it with Legos – use whatever materials you have around your home.

  • Go camping inside! If you have a tent that will fit, set it up, or you can build a fort with blankets, cushions, etc.

  • Do a wilderness watch! Go for a hike, walk around your neighbourhood, go for a drive, or look out your window at home and see how many different animals and birds you can spot.

  • Have a dance party! Crank up the music and enjoy the rhythm. If you have glow sticks or flashlights, this can add to the fun.

  • Watch a movie you’ve never seen before! If you’re having trouble finding one, look up ones that came out ten years before you were born.

  • Check out your local library! Besides a whole collection of books, movies, video games and more that you can access for FREE, your local library has a whole calendar of events that you and your family can access.

  • Be a tourist at home! Is there a museum, beach, restaurant, park, etc. in your community that you’ve never visited before? If so, now’s a great time to check it out.

  • Play a board game or do a puzzle! If you don’t have any at home, there are a bunch of different options client families can borrow for FREE from Lansdowne’s Resource Library.

  • Free toys from ice! Freeze some small toys in ice, and then let your kids get them out using warm water and salt.

  • Do a boat race! Get some toy boats or fold some paper ones and race them across a bathtub, pool, etc. by using a straw to blow air at them to move them forward.

  • Have a theme meal! Have foods that are all the same colour or start with the same letter.

Summer is the perfect time to slow down, get creative, and enjoy simple moments together as a family. The activity ideas from Lansdowne Children’s Centre are a great reminder that fun doesn’t always require expensive trips or complicated plans — sometimes the best memories come from a homemade fort, a silly dance party, or a thoughtful act of kindness.

I especially like the idea of turning ordinary days into little adventures, whether it’s exploring your own neighborhood, creating art, or having a themed meal. These activities encourage imagination, connection, and quality time away from everyday routines.

Finding new ways to keep kids engaged and inspired can make the last weeks of summer truly special. Exploring different online spaces and resources,…
