Communication includes speech sound production, understanding and producing language and using language to interact with others. Areas we work on in speech and language therapy: Understanding words and sentences Using words and putting words together Using language to interact with others Making speech sounds Stuttering Feeding and swallowing concerns What is a Speech-Language Pathologist? Speech-Language Pathologists (SLP) provide assessment and treatment for infants and children with communication delays or disorders, or feeding and swallowing concerns. What is a Communicative Disorders Assistant? A Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) provides speech and language intervention under the supervision of a SLP. Eligibility Start Referral Lansdowne Children's Centre is the lead agency for the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Preschool Speech and Language Program. Lansdowne speech-language pathologists (SLPs) provide speech and language intervention to children residing in Brant, Haldimand and Norfolk counties, and Six Nations of the Grand River and Mississaugas of the Credit First Nations. Services are provided at Lansdowne sites in Brantford (Brant County), Simcoe (Norfolk County), Dunnville and Caledonia (Haldimand County). Children are eligible for Preschool Speech and Language services from birth to school entry. Goals, Skills and Keywords Expectations Once a referral to Speech and Language Therapy has been completed your child will be placed on an Assessment Waitlist. Our team will contact you to book your appointment when your turn comes. At assessment, you and your child will meet with a a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who will carry out an evaluation to determine your child’s abilities and needs in communication and/or feeding. The SLP will review findings with you, and together you will determine the best plan of intervention for your child following our care pathways. Your child's personalized plan may include: In-person and/or virtual appointments Individual or group therapy with a SLP or CDA Parent and caregiver training Monitoring and consultation Home programs You Belong Here. Intensive ABA therapy treatment is 6+ hours and/or a minimum of 3 scheduled appointments per week. Treatment is primarily provided at a 1:1 - child to therapist - ratio, with daily opportunities for interaction and play with peers. Children will be taught essential skills and the management of challenging behaviours, working across several developmental domains, including: • Language • Communication • Play • Social interactions • Personal hygiene • Toileting • School-readiness Who is eligible? Intensive ABA therapy is available for children/youth, age birth to 12 years, with an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) diagnosis. A screening process will be applied to confirm eligibility for this program, including registration with the Ontario Autism Program (OAP). Eligibility Start Referral Intensive ABA is available for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, up to age 6 years old. Registration with OAP is not required but is recommended. Goals, Skills and Keywords Expectations •Individualized assessment will determine specific goals for your child before treatment begins. •There will be an emphasis upon parent involvement and training within this intervention. •Therapy will be provided at Lansdowne Children’s Centre in Brantford. •Intensive ABA therapy is a commitment of 6+ hours per week. As Director of Inclusive Supports with Rygiel, Jamie brings 15 years of nursing expertise to her role and is deeply passionate about fostering inclusive environments where everyone feels valued and connected. Jamie holds specialized certifications, including Infection Control from Queen’s University, Competent Supervision, and Health & Safety training tailored for group home facilities. Her additional credentials in nursing, physical assessments, and navigating legal aspects in care reinforce her commitment to quality and safety. A lifelong learner, Jamie also attended Humber College’s Developmental Services Worker program, expanding her skills to better support individuals with diverse needs. Her lived experience is equally inspiring; Jamie and her husband spent years residing in a group home, supporting five individuals, and providing treatment foster care for at-risk youth. Known for her advocacy, networking, and ability to educate, Jamie collaborates with others to promote inclusion and ensure that every individual feels a sense of belonging within their community.
